Larry Steward, who was living in his car after his employer went out of business, went to the Dixie Diner after two days without a meal, and ordered breakfast without knowing how he could pay. He was looking around on the floor, pretending he’d lost his wallet when the cook, who had helped him look, held out a $20 bill. Larry vowed that as soon as he could, he’d pay that kindness forward. By the time he’d become wealthy in cable and phone services in Kansas City, Missouri, he was giving away substantial amounts as a Secret Santa - all told, more than $1.4 million over the years. In 2006, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and decided to go public, thousands of people signed up to become Secret Santas. When Larry died in 2007, his chosen successor—an anonymous Kansas City businessman—took over for him and continues to lead the Society of Secret Santas today.
