The Afghanistan women's football team found a safe haven in Australia after being imperiled when the Taliban took over Afghanistan again in 2021. And while FIFA no longer recognizes them as the Afghan team, they hope that will change. “This is our right as women,” says team captain and goalkeeper Fatima Yousufi. “We have a second chance. It’s amazing to be alive. So we need to have a second chance to represent the country, to represent the girls and our sisters and mothers who are back in Afghanistan and suffering from that situation. They don’t have the right to play, to go after their education, to go outside and be themselves.”
